A Look Back at 2019 and Jumping Into 2020

We’re taking a look back at some of the biggest kitchen and bathroom trends we saw throughout 2019 and predicting some of the trends for 2020!

What gained popularity? In 2019, we saw a rise of contrasting colors in both the kitchen and the bathroom! Rather than matching the countertop to the existing or new cabinets, we saw homeowners opt to use dark cabinets with light countertops, or dark countertops with light cabinets. We especially saw a rise in popularity with dark countertops and light cabinets. Granite colors such as Black Pearl, Absolute Black, and Brazilian Black, in a range of finishes, were some of our bestsellers.

2019 and 2020 Trends

In 2019, HGTV considered black “arguably the ‘it’ color for 2019,” and this trend is something we noticed! Homeowners opted for darker colors in both the bathroom and kitchens. This is a trend that we predict for 2020, while homeowners may use less black, darker colors are still trending. For example, Pantone’s Color of the Year is Classic Blue, “a shade reminiscent of the sky at dusk,” and Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year is Naval, a deep blue that “creates a calm and grounding environment.” We expect the contrasting colors for kitchen and bathrooms to continue into the new year, especially with rich blue cabinets and contrasting countertops! Check out our latest projects for a full project gallery on blue cabinets!

Another trend we saw in 2019 was the rise of the full height backsplash or full height splash behind the range! We completed several projects with full height backsplashes in a range of stones, including quartz, marble, and granite. Full height backsplashes create a seamless look in the kitchen. We saw homeowners opt to use the same stone as the countertop or use a contrasting color.

For sinks and hardware, 2019 saw homeowners select single bowl sinks for the kitchen and rectangle-shaped sinks for the bathroom! We noticed a major trend towards the single bowl sink for the kitchen, typically accompanied by a single hole faucet. Most homeowners opted for the modern look of the single bowl sink in a variety of sink options (farm sink, stainless steel sink, and granite composite sink).

Bathroom Trends

For bathrooms, we saw homeowners gravitate to rectangle-shaped sinks over oval sinks. Rectangle undermount sinks and rectangle vessel sinks gained popularity throughout 2019.
For 2020, we have a few predictions for both kitchen and bathroom trends! We see contrasting colors remaining popular throughout the coming year; whether this be with contrasting cabinets and countertops, paintwork, or backsplashes. Another trend for 2020 will be the return of color to the kitchen, especially with navy and blue hues.

We predict that full height slab backsplashes will continue to gain popularity, especially with dramatic colors/patterns/veining. One 2020 trend to watch are full height backsplashes that use the same stone for both the countertop and backsplash. Sometimes full height backsplashes use a contrasting color/stone to the countertops, but our prediction is a rise in using the same color for both countertop and backsplash.

One thing that designers are predicting for 2020 is the rise of the double island. We’re excited to see if this trend gains popularity in 2020! The double island is a fun twist on the typical kitchen island storage, dining area, and workstation. For homeowners that choose to put either a cooktop or sink in the island, the double island is a great way to separate the workstation of the kitchen from the dining area/entertaining area.
