How durable is granite?  Granite is one of earth’s hardest rocks, which makes it an excellent choice for countertops and other surfaces.  It offers extreme durability, such as scratch resistance, impact resistance, and heat resistance.  It has been used in building construction across the world for thousands of years.  Granite tends to be granular in patterns.  Its beauty comes from its unique patterns and limitless array of colors.  Granite slabs are available in several finishes, including polished, honed, and leathered finishes.

Where is Granite used? Granite is perfect for use throughout your house!  Some granite can even be used outside, as it can withstand extreme weather conditions.  Indoor uses for granite include kitchen countertops, laundry room countertops, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, backsplashes, shower seats, desktops, and more!

Once you’ve picked a granite color for your countertop or other project, the next step is to pick an edge profile!  We offer a solid selection of edge profiles to go along with the style you’re seeking.  Ask us which edge profiles we recommend!

Cleaning your granite countertops after each use (or at least daily) is recommended. Use warm, soapy water or any ammonia-free and bleach-free cleaning solution to wipe up dirt, spills, or any other residue.  Feel free to also use any product specifically marketed as a granite cleaner or granite-safe product.  You can also ask us about our 3-in-1 “Cleaner, Protecter, Polisher”, available for purchase!

In order to help protect your granite, a sealer solution applied (either the standard 1-year or upgraded 15-year option, depending on your selection) at the time of fabrication.  The sealer prevents liquid absorption and staining.  If you select the standard 1-year sealer, you must remember to re-seal the granite one year after our factory sealer was applied.  A properly applied sealer will cause water to bead up on the surface of the stone, rather than penetrate the stone.

Granite is a heat-resistant stone.  This gives you the ability to place hot pots directly on the surface. However, it is best practice to use a heat trivet as extra protection.  As with any product, granite is not indestructible.

Granite is scratch-resistant.  This gives you the ability to cut directly on the surface, although you may eventually dull your knives!  It is best practice to use a cutting board as extra protection, especially for heavy cutting and chopping.  Remember, granite is not indestructible, therefore it is not scratch-proof!  If you ever find your granite has scratched, contact us to see how we can help remedy the situation.

While all granite is porous, certain colors are more susceptible to staining than others. Sealer prevents liquid absorption and staining, thus preventing staining.  If you begin to notice discoloration or watermarks on your granite surface, please contact us as soon as possible.  It is best practice to clean up liquid spills immediately.

Granite can chip or break if impacted by a heavy object.  Do not stand on your countertop or bang items against it.  Use care when placing large or heavy objects on your countertops.
