Types of Natural Stone in Showers
When selecting natural stone for a shower, it’s best to consult with Marble Granite World staff in order to select the most appropriate stone for a shower. Selecting the right stone will make cleaning and maintenance much more hassle-free. Here’s an expert tip: light-colored natural stones tend to be more porous while darker stones have a tighter molecular structure and are less porous. So, you many want to consider color when choosing natural stone for your shower. Quartz is another excellent option for showers, as it is virtually non-porous and easy to clean and maintain.
Our customers often choose the following natural stones for shower applications.
- Marble
- Granite
- Quartz
- Slate
The secret to creating showers that are both beautiful and easy to maintain include using large, full-height pieces. This will make your shower seem taller and larger, as well as add a seamless look to your shower. When considering a tile shower, remember that grout is porous and will still collect and absorb water, shampoo, and soap. For these reasons, you may want to avoid using tile in your shower.

Caring for your Natural Stone Shower
We encourage the use of a mild, non-abrasive cleaner for daily, weekly, and occasional cleanings—typically a neutral cleaner with a pH level of about seven. This will discourage any build-up of mold or mildew both on the stone as well as in the grout. Soapy cleaners can create buildup and attract dirt. Vinegar-based and chemical cleaners can damage your natural stone surface.
Here are a few more helpful tips for keeping your natural stone shower surfaces clean.
- Use a squeegee on the walls after showering.
- For enclosed showers, leave the shower door open to allow moisture to escape.
- Use a glycerin soap rather than traditional bar soap to reduce soap scum.
As with most stone placed in a kitchen or bathroom environment, you may need to remember to re-seal your shower every few years depending on the type of stone used. This mostly applies to the use of light-colored marbles and granites. Remember that quartz does not need to be sealed. For all stones that require sealing, Marble Granite World applies a free, one-year sealer prior to install of all pieces. We also offer a sealer upgrade that lasts 15-years for a minimal additional cost. Check with your Marble Granite World sales representative with any questions regarding sealer or the sealing process.
